Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas have been a popular plant in New England gardens since the very first homes and farms were built here 300 years ago. Since then hybridizers have created dozens of varieties that have expanded the available hardiness, colors, flower shapes and sizes. Here at Vermont Flower Farm and Gardens we only sell Hydrangea paniculta and Hydrangea arborescens. These are guaranteed northern New England hardy and although they still do not come in the bright blue or pink forms many in warmer climates can succeed with, there are many wonderful colors and sizes that are sure to please. Hydrangeas do best here in full sun and with sweet soil. These two varieties can be pruned in fall or early spring. In spring they can benefit from your choice of fertilizer and a handful of lime to maintain that sweet soil. They may be pruned and shaped to your desire and we’re happy with a further discussion of how to site, plant and maintain your choices. We do not do any mail order on hydrangeas because of the size of the pots we have them growing in. They are all priced at $32 each regardless of eventual size. Enjoy!
