Hosta Leathern Sheen

Mark Zilis/Doug Lohman 1988. Origin: ‘Sum and Substance’ X venusta. A small hosta, glossy, dark green, ovate-cordate, flat leaves, 7″ x 3″. Red dotted petioles. 24″ tall scapes with light lavender flowers. The dark green leaf color is one of the darkest we have ever seen–about as dark as the ‘Revolution’ we have that reverted almost to black. It is a very good grower.  Update: It appears that voles have eaten all of the Leather Sheen growing in our display garden. During Spring 2024 we will dig two areas where it was planted to see if any roots remain. In the meantime, we’ll try to obtain some specimens to start over again. It has always been a popular small hosta because of its color and shine. Sorry!
