Hosta Humpback Whale
Mildred Seaver/Paula Lehtola/Charly Seaver 2012. Unknown origin. A very large hosta with dark green, cupped leaves that each exceed 17″ X 15″ at maturity. 40″ tall scapes with white flowers stand above the leaves. George remembers so well an AHS meeting when Mildred Seaver was asked if she would comment on her success with registering over 400 hostas. She laughed and then demonstrated that from her knowledge of the hostas she grew, she would pull up the leaves, and look underneath for new seedlings. Some hostas were good producers but some seedlings needed to be culled and from those that remained, she would work with the best. That particular day a friend of Charly’s had brought Mildred’s hosta, Imperial Moth for the auction. Mildred had only ever given one plant of Imperial Moth to anyone and that was to her son, Charly. The ensuing conversation–mostly one-sided and by Mildred, was quite interesting. Humpback Whale available in 6 quart pots just planted in spring 2024 so available again. 5 examples on our display garden.
