Hosta Great Expectations
John Bond/Paul Aden 1988. ‘Elegans’ heritage. Irregular dark bluish-green margin, a goldy-yellow center in spring blending to cream in summer. One beautiful, quite popular hosta but here’s the story. We had to have this one when it was first out. We bought a flat and half died and the other half died over time. We kept moving their location–more sun, less sun, more water, less water. Finally gave up. We eventually attributed it to tissue culture problems. Then growers began to mention the need to grow it where there was good morning sun and consistent moisture. We waited for twenty more years. Four years ago I bought some from a friend in Massachusetts. Never had a problem. Last year we bought a few more. We should not have waited so long. But…..last year’s floods took many away from our propagation area so we have a very limited supply for sale at the farm—$24. No mail order until 2025. Sorry but Mother Nature calls the shots.
