Hosta Frosted Jade
Lillian Maroushek ’78. Flat, heart shaped, pointed, dark jade green with bright white narrow margins and slight wavy edge at maturity. Medium lavender flowers. Frosty look to leaves is perhaps a waxy coating similar to that on some blue hosta. Large. I have given up on Frosted Jade after over 15 years because I cannot figure out how to grow it in a world of voles. There is something about it that voles smell and love to eat. When I first started with it, I had a wonderful, very large specimen plant. Over a couple years only 20% of the plant was left. I dug that out, reamended the soil and planted it in a mesh cage and the voles went over the top and ate it again. If anyone knows more about its heritage I’d be interested in learning.
