Hosta Big Daddy $24

Florence Shaw/Paul Aden 1978. sieboldiana x ‘Tokudama’. Large, chalky blue-grey leaves that are rounded, somewhat cupped, and heavily puckered. 26″ tall scapes with white flowers. Prior to the first floods in 2023, the Big Daddy and the Elegans hostas got customers very confused. They would visit our display garden and come back with pictures on their phone and ask “What are those giant hostas?” They had been planted for about ten years and the proximity to the Winooski River always kept the ground moist below the surface. That encouraged terrific growth every year. The Elegans were especially “giant” with some leaves exceeding 22″ in diameter. During the December 2023 floods they were uncovered just as winter had begun and then really got beat up when 30 feet of water went over the top in July 2024. Since there is no available “plant CPR” what we have left is…well….what we have left on display. The message however, is that if you feed and water those big hostas and have a few year’s patience,  you will be surprised!
