Hosta Trendsetter
Trendsetter is a 2019 registration by Hans Hansen and Walters Gardens. It’s a streaked Niagra Falls crossed with the giant, Empress Wu. The heart-shaped edges have a nice wave, and they open in springtime with a yellow edge that turns to creamy white as summer progresses. The scape height is listed by Hugo Phillips MyHostas site as 33″ tall. Scapes have green pods after pale lavender flowers. Sadly, I lost a fairly new Niagra Falls during the winter 2021 to voles so I do not have it to compare. From +25 years growing plants in Marshfield, Vermont I have noted a discouraging population of voles that increases annually. These rodents do not hibernate, eat plant roots, and from my experience they eat plants of a variety based upon the starch content, i.e., the more starch, the quicker they will eat all that plant. I’ll report back on Trendsetter in a couple years. I hope I am still smiling! The picture is from the Walter Gardens commercial site and use is allowed with this credit. They are from Zeeland, Michigan. Many thanks, Walters Gardens, for many years of doing business with you!
