Daylily Challenger $21

Stout 1949. George collects tall plants including daylilies and Challenger fits the bill at 5-7 feet tall. The blooms are medium to dusky brick red with a yellow throat. Although the scapes are thin, they are strong enough to handle high winds. This daylily is one of our few Evergreens. It’s Diploid and is a rebloomer. It won an Honorable Mention in 1953 from the American Hemerocallis Society. Works well along the middle to back of gardens or mixed in with other tall plants. Often purchased by Stout Collectors. Need a great daylily book? Try Daylilies: The Wild Species and Garden Clones, both old and new, of the genus Hemerocallis.  by A.B. Stout 1934, Sagapress; Reprinted 1984. Reprinted by Timber Press 1992. Like other tall daylilies? Consider Autumn Minaret, Autumn Prince, Citrina altimissa, Citrina vespertina, Hesperus, Steeple Jackie. You will find all these scattered about our gardens at Vermont Flower Farm.
