Daylily Bonanza
The American Daylily Society lists two daylilies as Bonanza on their database and the descriptions are a tad confusing to me. The one we grow (pictured left here) and sell is by Gates 1994. Height is 32-34″, bloom 5.5 inches, early to midseason, reblooms, semi-evergreen, diploid, fragrant, red orange self with very small green throat. But the Society also lists a Bonanza as “Bonanza-1954 (Ferrick, 1954) height 34 inches (86 cm), midseason, dormant, diploid, fragrant, Orange yellow self. Here’s a picture of that one as it appears. We do not grow that one. There’s always a chance of some confusion with older daylilies. You would be surprised how many people have brought me plants that they have been gifted , had growing on a property they purchased, or found growing in the wild. I have a few resources who help me improve upon my guesses…. but….. New England being home to early colonizers offers some explanation why there are so many variations to be found up this way. I find it about impossible to walk by an old foundation when I am out hiking.
