Hosta Risky Business
Tony Avent, Plant Delights Nursery/Hans Hansen, 2002. So here’s a Risky Business story for you. Historically Criss and Rick Thompson registered Striptease in 1991. It was a Gold Standard (Pauline Banyai) registration. We had moved our business to our house in Marshfield, Vermont in 1989 so it was probably 1995-6-7 that things were expanding and we had already purchased Striptease for a couple-three years. Halfway through the summer, I noticed that one of the potted Striptease was clearly not Striptease. For some reason, I took it out of the pot and planted it in back of the row of Striptease plants. It was a vigorous plant and it grew and grew. It wasn’t until years later that I found I had been growing a sport of Striptease that was by then named Risky Business. Wide, dark green margins and narrow, pure white centers. A great clumper and 22″-24″ lavender flowers. Every year we pot up more and every year they all sell. Sorry, but the July 2023 floods–the worst since the 1920’s, put 21 feet of water from the Winooski River over our entire hosta propagation area. Risky Business is one that went down the river. This is a big loss to us because we had it before it was even ever named.
