JAPANESE TREE LILAC
S. reticulata
Creamy white blooms which get very large and showy over time as does the tree-like shrub. 25-40 feet tall if left unpruned. Zones 2-7. Early. If you want to see how large Japanese lilacs grow, coming into Plainfield, Vt from East Montpelier on Route 2 on the sharp corners just before the sign and Rt 215 to Goddard Colleege, the road is lined with them. The extra large ones hang over the road, occasional sturck by tractor trailers. The fragrance of so many in such a small area is noticeable coming from either direction long before you get there.
