Le Jardin de Botanique de Montreal '83. Medium green, slightly arched leaves up to 26" long with scapes standing 5-7 feet tall with dark lilac flowers. A hummingbird magnet in August. Handles sun well. If you are a lily grower, try with Lilium superbum and Lilium henryi as they will bloom the same time. The lilies and Tall Boy are all lofty and make a stunning backdrop for a garden that needs quick focus.

Avent '98. A Little Aurora sport. Small, rounded, bright gold leaves with a wide, light green border. The name derives from a maple leaf- like marking on each leaf. Partial sun is needed to get the markings to look good. The correct place has been a challenge in our Vermont not-too-sunny display garden. Finally have it. Lavender flowers. Nyikos 1998. Small, ponted green leaves with obvious veining on 12" tall plant. Forms dense mound. Light lavender flowers. A good ground cover or border plant. A cross between Birchwood Parky's Gold and Golden Tiara. A good grower. $12.75

S. Yoshie/Ruh. Collected near the Japanese river Tenryu. Powdery blue 18" long leaves and 6 foot scapes with lavender blooms in August here. Like Tall Boy, Tenryu scapes afford background attention for a back of border planting. At some point we will use it to line out the new paths at the hosta display garden.

Zillis/Barta and Micheletti 2012. A medium sized, vigorous grower. Rippled, shiny green leaves with good substance. Has pale lavender flowers late August on so offers garden color along with Raspberry Sorbet, Red October and Regal Rhubarb. Display

Hawkridge Farm. Not Registered. Heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with good substance. They have a wide blue margin with a narrow center of creamy yellow in spring that changes to white by summer. An Elegans sport but better grower. Leave room when planting.

Hansen 99. It's a Sum & Substance sport so that suggests it could be large which it is. Allow plenty of space for years ahead. Solid, glossy chartreuse-green center with a wide gold band around each leaf. Large flowered, light lavender blooms in August here. Keep it watered. $21.00

Maekawa 1987. Blue-green, puckered, cupped leaves with yellow-gold centers. White flowers on 24" scapes blooming in July here. Slow growing but a beauty after 3-4 years. Half shade, maybe a little less in Vermont.

Dick Ward 1999. One of the largest hostas out there, so much so that the 18" X 14" matte finished, green leaves get floppy by mid summer. Leave a good 5 feet when planting, keep back away from house/buildings, trees.

Species from Quelpaert Island, Korea. A dense, spreading mound of smooth, mid-green, slightly undulate leaves. Nice purple flowers, white center, on a 10" scape. Note some variation in color. Great rock garden plant!
